Are you in some sort of Ministry, or is God dealing with you in this area? I’ve got a few foundational processes that will greatly boost your momentum. By answering a few of the 5 W Questions (& one H) from elementary school: Who?, What?, When?, Where?, Why?, & How?, you will come out with a Mission, a Vision, & a Strategy for achieving both.
First off, do you have a Mission Statement? If so, what is it? Is it short & broad, or is it longer & precise? Generally speaking, a Mission Statement should be one solid sentence; short & to the point, yet still broad enough to allow for growth in certain areas. I’ll give Blaze’s Mission Statement as an example: “To Ignite The Urban Culture Towards Full Devotion To Christ”. This sums up our mission. It answers the “What” question of our existence, “What has God called us to do?” It is one sentence that fully explains what we’re all about.
Notice, it doesn’t say “How” we’ll do this, that will be answered later in the “Strategy” section. The “Who question is God, you, & whoever else He calls to be involved; the “When” question is obviously now, while the “Where” question is dependent on the people you want to reach: urban, rural, local, abroad, foreign etc. But your Mission Statement should be broad, brief, & Biblical, listing what it is the Ministry will do. You may start with a personal Mission Statement to go along with your Ministry or Organizational Statement. What your organizational mission is to your ministry, your personal mission is to your life. That being said, your personal mission will determine what you will do with your life & how you will serve Christ, thus effecting your ministry, or creating a new one. My personal mission is: “To Become More Like Christ Each Day & Remain Obedient So God Can Use Me Effectively”. This ties right into the mission for Blaze.

Now, since Blaze has different areas or departments, such as teaching & music, we may want to have departmental mission statements as well. Authority Records is Blaze’s record label, & our music department’s mission is: “To Relevantly & Accurately Translate Scripture Through Hip Hop Music”.
So take some time & really focus on what it is God has called you to do. Not what you want to do, but what He wants you to do. He’s given us all purpose & talents in certain areas, pray about it, you may already have a ministry, but you need a mission statement. Maybe you have one already, it just needs revision; whatever the case, keep it broad, brief, & Biblical.
After you have a Mission Statement that you are satisfied with & you sense God’s approval, then you can begin to craft your Vision Statement.
